Evening and drinks formats dominate, and the calendar is dense enough that the same faces appear repeatedly across a region. Information is the commodity: who is buying, what is coming to market, which scheme has stalled. It is also sharply cyclical, so a room in a slow market has a different tone and a different attendance from the same room two years earlier.

What to do before you go

Know which side of the table everyone is on. A room that is nine-tenths agents is useful if you are an agent and close to useless if you are looking for funding, and that ratio is the single most predictive thing about whether an evening is worth it.
