The dominant format is the evening meetup: a couple of talks, then an hour of standing around, usually free and usually sponsored by a recruiter or a cloud vendor. Status in the room comes from what you have built rather than what you sell, and open selling is the fastest way to be quietly written off. The corollary is that a lot of genuinely useful commercial relationships start here and take months to surface as anything.

What to do before you go

Find out what people are actually working on before you go, because that is the only currency in the room. Going in with a question about somebody’s project works; going in with a pitch does not. If the room is mostly recruiters and vendors, it is worth knowing that in advance rather than at half past seven.
